Leader Healthcare, a multinational medical device and products distributor with offices around the Gulf region, incorporated VirtualRehab into its rehabilitation portfolio through a distribution agreement signed with Virtualware. A new treatment has been launched at Basildon University Hospital that adds fun, variety and motivation to vital exercise programmes for patients with conditions including multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Guille Barre syndrome, spinal cord injuries, head injuries and stroke. Basildon is one of only three hospitals in the country to offer VirtualRehab therapy, and the first in east of England. The therapy uses computer software that operates with Microsoft Xbox hardware. This would more normally be associated with teenagers killing zombies, but the speciallydesigned Virtual Rehab software tracks 25 different joints in the body....

Virtualware signs agreement with University of East Anglia to study the use of the VirtualRehab platform for stroke rehabilitation. The agreement includes the funding of a three year PhD program to investigate the use of a virtual reality neurorehabilitation platform that uses gaming to enhance restoration of movement in stroke patients. Virtualware has signed an agreement with the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Norwich, UK to fund a studentship which will explore the use of a virtual reality neurorehabilitation platform in order to investigate the use of various gaming models to enhance restoration of movement in persons who have suffered a stroke....

We recently had the opportunity to speak to Monica Nieves, Director of the l’Hospital de Neurorehabilitació Miquel Martí i Pol. in Lleida, Spain where they recently incorporated VirtualRehab and MindPlay Games. Monica explained to us how the centre was set up by the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation with a multidisciplinary focus. Dr. Nieves began by saying “The persons living in Lleida who suffer from a neuroprogressive disease such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Huntington’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s, etc....

Video games and technology are not only good fun, but the can also be used to help people with disabilities during their rehabilitation to reach goals that they had achieved before. This fact was highlighted by a group of 20 volunteers from Microsoft offices around the world and who form the “Empowering Youth” group on a recent work visit to Costa Rica. The group teamed up with the SOS Foundation and the Poet Centre in Costa Rica in late November of 2015 to support the development of digital skills of students in vulnerable area....
