VirtualRehab at 2015 UK Stroke Forum

_ Virtualware Health will be exhibiting at the 10th Anniversary UK Stroke Forum Conference, an event which has been endorsed by the World Stroke Organisation. This year’s Forum takes place at the Liverpool ACC, from December 1st to 3rd.  As the UK’s largest multidisciplinary stroke forum, it’s the annual meeting point for over 1,300 stroke care professionals from across the UK and other countries to share their expertise and to find out about the latest in best practice in stroke research and service delivery.

VirtualRehab is the first virtual reality rehabilitation platform to receive CE mark approval from the European Commission and has been designed for professional therapists who work with Stroke survivors, as well as with persons who suffer from other neurological conditions. VirtualRehab is made up of clinically-tested therapeutic gamified exercises that help patients work various upper and lower body motor functions using the Microsoft® Kinect Xbox One and fine motor skills of the hands using the Leap Motion® controller. These digital exercises can be customized for each patient’s particular needs and provide objective outcome data showing therapy effectiveness.

VirtualRehab was designed in collaboration with neurologists and physiotherapists as a means of augmenting traditional therapy in clinics and patients’ home in order to promote the necessary repetition of movements that lead to significant and lasting patient outcomes. VirtualRehab also helps motivate patients and keeps them engaged over longer periods of time, which also results in improvements in quality of life.

It is currently being used in the Neurorehabilitation unit of the National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery (NHNN) Queen Square in London as well in Croydon University Hospital’s Stroke Unit where it will be used in patients’ homes.  VirtualRehab will also soon be installed in in the Neuro physio department of the Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital by the end of the year. __

David Fried, International Business Development Director at Virtualware Health, had this to say about the upcoming event, “The UK Stroke forum is the perfect venue to show how VirtualRehab is currently being used by therapists around the world to help Stroke survivors. We’re also keen to show how it can also be used in rehabilitation for a variety of neurodegenerative, neuromuscular and neurovascular diseases and disorders, including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson´s disease, Traumatic Brain Injury, Alzheimer´s disease, dystrophies and even to help the elderly improve mobility.”  __

VirtualRehab is currently being offered in rehabilitation centres throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America. Patients have logged more than 14,400 game sessions and almost 1,400 full hours in therapy through the Cloud version up to now.

Demos of VirtualRehab will be available at the UK Stroke Forum in Liverpool at Booth #G2.
