Madrid, the 5th of May 2014. – ORPEA, European leader in the field of caring for the elderly, has recently introduced a new virtual rehabilitation system in their centres in Madrid, Spain. The platform developed by Virtualware and supported by the Spanish Society of Neurology, is based on the motion capture videogame technology of Microsoft Kinect.
Thanks to VirtualRehab, the user can interact with the game in a 3D environment where they do different exercises with their upper or lower body. The exercises have been specifically developed and designed with physiotherapists so that the patients do the exercises according to their disability level, so that the main body functions being worked are balance, load transfer, coordination and endurance.
ORPEA is committed to using this cutting edge technology in order to improve the quality of life of their patients, and by using VirtualRehab their therapists are able to treat different ailments that are a result of various neurological diseases, thereby improving muscle strength, endurance, balance, posture and movement problems as well as coordination.
The rehabilitation system introduced in the ORPEA centres of Sanchinarro and Las Rozas in Madrid, includes highly motivating games to help retrain certain functions that are often deteriorated in the elderly due to different neurological and physical afflictions as well as psycho motor training which is vital for daily activities (eating, personal hygiene, dressing, etc.).
Aside from the clear benefits for the user, VirtualRehab simplifies the work for the treatment staff (physiotherapist and therapist) with an easy-to-use therapy editor, which allows the games to be customized for each patient´s particular needs, and allows tracking and monitoring of each patient´s progress and evolution.
